Planet Rock: The Album

A collection of the Tommy Boy singles credited to Afrika Bambaataa and the Soulsonic Force, with three previously unreleased tracks. Silverman's contract with Bambaataa covered singles only and renegotiating it proved difficult, so a full-length album waited until 1986. Side one holds Planet Rock, Looking for the Perfect Beat and a remix of Renegades of Funk credited to the Latin Rascals, Albert Cabrera and Tony Moran. Side two opens with Frantic Situation, mixed by Andy Wallace and Jay Burnett, and then turns to the new material: Who You Funkin' With? featuring Melle Mel, Go-Go Pop featuring Trouble Funk, and They Made A Mistake.

Arthur Baker produced and mixed the first four tracks, with John Robie sharing the production of Looking for the Perfect Beat and Renegades of Funk. Bambaataa, Doug Wimbish, Fats Comet, Keith LeBlanc and Skip McDonald produced Who You Funkin' With?, and Leroi Evans and Rae Serrano produced Go-Go Pop. They Made A Mistake was produced by Wimbish, Fats Comet, LeBlanc and McDonald, mixed by Adrian Sherwood, with Pow Wow and MC G.L.O.B.E. performing. Bambaataa wrote the liner notes.

Robert Christgau graded it A minus and wrote that the way Looking for the Perfect Beat builds on Planet Rock was "electrohop's transcendent moment". Two of the unreleased tracks, he said, were anything but filler. The Guardian described it as collecting his previous singles and finding him working with Melle Mel and Trouble Funk. Slant Magazine ranked it 84th on its list of the best albums of the 1980s, and it appears in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.
