The soundtrack to Anderson's 1999 film has nine Mann songs, plus tracks by Gabrielle, Supertramp and Jon Brion. Anderson said he sat down to write an adaptation of Aimee Mann songs. Mann wrote two songs for the film, You Do and Save Me. Deathly and Driving Sideways also appear on Bachelor No. 2, while Nothing Is Good Enough is an instrumental here and has lyrics on that album. One is her cover of Harry Nilsson's 1968 song, first recorded for a 1995 tribute album, and Wise Up, written for Jerry Maguire, is the song the cast sing along to in the film.
The A.V. Club's Alex McLevy argued in 2020 that the film worked as an advertisement for her music and noted that Anderson heard demos from the sessions for Bachelor No. 2 while writing, pointing to a line Claudia says to a police officer, a twist on the opening of Deathly. Robert Christgau called it Mann's most flattering setting to date. By February 2001 it had sold 410,000 copies in the United States and been certified gold, and Save Me was nominated for an Academy Award.
