Hirsch, Godin and Dunckel all lived in Montmartre. Godin had heard a demo of hers and invited her to record for Moon Safari, and she wrote the lyrics and melody of All I Need, later writing You Make It Easy for the album as well. The song is based on Les professionnels from the Premiers Symptômes EP. Dunckel said her sound was very folk, from playing acoustic guitar, and that the duo wanted the end of the album to be mellow and a little melancholic. He pointed to her lines about the planets and being behind the sun, an image of floating around the planets that fit the album's theme.
Dunckel plays organ, Korg MS-20, Rhodes and Wurlitzer, and Godin plays acoustic guitar, bass, Korg MS-20, Minimoog, Solina strings, drums and organ. Patrick Woodcock added acoustic guitar. The strings were recorded at Abbey Road by Peter Cobbin. It was the third single, released on 9 November 1998, and reached 29 on the UK chart and 28 in Scotland. Chris Jones of the BBC said Hirsch's vocals could almost break your stimulant-weary heart, and Rolling Stone called it a tragic café ballad. It was chosen for the book 1001 Songs You Must Hear Before You Die.
Video and live
Mike Mills's video follows a young skateboarding couple talking about their affection for each other. Air's web series Air Time Machine said they were a real couple from Ventura, California. Mills said it was a turning point for him, a willingness to be totally sincere. In the logged setlists the song appears in 120 of the 332 that list songs, the earliest on 16 October 1998 at KCRW Studios in Santa Monica.
