Released by Virgin in February 1998 as the first single from Moon Safari, it is noted for helping the band, and French dance music more generally, break into British and American markets. It reached 13 on the UK singles chart and 22 on the US dance club chart. Godin said it almost missed the album, because it has a verse and chorus and is more upbeat than the rest. In the end, he said, it was the biggest track on the record.

Godin played a riff on a Höfner bass, and Dunckel said the words sexy boy out of the blue. Godin said the song was about who they wanted to be, since they were not handsome when they were younger. Dunckel called it a seduction song about men wanting to look good and be looked at, and said that in 1998 it was taboo to talk about men's sexuality. The woman's voice is Dunckel, treated electronically, especially through a Leslie. Marlon plays drums. Godin said that on the night they made it he knew his life would change.

Video, remixes and covers

Mike Mills's video follows the band around New York, where they find a toy monkey that in fantasy becomes a giant and flies to the Moon. The fantasy is in colored animation, the real world in black and white. Singles carried remixes by Beck (the Sex Kino Mix), Cassius, and Étienne de Crécy with the Flower Pistols. The song is in the 1999 film 10 Things I Hate About You. An orchestral version arranged by Roger Neill was released in December 2010 under the name The Fallen Angels and used in advertising for Lynx and Axe.

Live

It is the most played song in the band's logged setlists, appearing in 300 of the 332 logged setlists that list songs. The earliest of them is an appearance on Canal+'s Nulle Part Ailleurs in Paris in January 1998.
