Louder's writer heard Delta blues in it and noted that its narrator sheds his possessions and pines for the woman he has lost. The Boston Globe's John Reed called it a seemingly distant cousin of Hey Joe, with its question about whose socks were being darned while the narrator was away.
Jay Farrar and the Sir Omaha Quintet covered it on More Oar. In Beck's Record Club Feist sang it, backed by electro-pop and a solo from Wilco's Nels Cline. The 2024 biography by Cam Cobb and Robin Spence takes its title from the song.
