Released on 13 August 2007 as the fourth single from Back to Black, the song was recorded in Miami in 2005 with Salaam Remi, who produced it and played bass, piano and guitar. Troy Auxilly-Wilson played drums, Bruce Purse trumpet and flugelhorn, and Vincent Henry saxophones, flute and clarinet. Tom Elmhirst mixed it. Winehouse wrote the melody and lyrics over an interpolation of Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell's 1967 recording of Ain't No Mountain High Enough, written by Nickolas Ashford and Valerie Simpson. The lyric has her telling herself off, with the line about being her own best friend. A slower original version, which Andrew Ryce of Pitchfork called almost unrecognizably elegiac, was released on Lioness: Hidden Treasures.

It entered the UK chart at 37 on 5 August 2007 and peaked at 16 after the physical release, and it spent four weeks at number one on the UK Airplay Chart. David LaChapelle directed the video in Los Angeles on 22 May 2007, along Hollywood Boulevard and in a room at the Grand Motel on La Cienega Boulevard. The song is in the film Amy and on its soundtrack. In October 2023 Skepta released Can't Play Myself (A Tribute to Amy), which samples it. She sang it in 102 of the 265 logged setlists that list songs, from Later with Jools Holland in London in October 2006 to Belgrade on 18 June 2011.
