Winehouse wrote it and performed it as a solo track on Back to Black, and it was released as the second single on 8 January 2007. Tom Elmhirst mixed it. A remix with a guest verse from the Wu-Tang Clan member Ghostface Killah went to radio, and a second remix with more of his verses appears on his album More Fish. In the week ending 14 January 2007 it peaked at 18 on the UK chart, the same week Back to Black first reached number one. Billboard felt the track in its original form could be no better.
Phil Griffin, who also directed the video for Rehab, directed this one with sets built at 3 Mills Studios in East London. It premiered on VH1 in early March 2007. Her performance at the 50th Grammy ceremony in February 2008, given by satellite from London, drove digital sales in the US and gave the song a new Billboard Hot 100 peak of 77. The actor Roger Moore said he had no idea why she put him in the lyrics. The BBC's Matt Harvey noted that she gets caught out by her lickle carpet burns.
She sang it in 108 of the 265 logged setlists that list songs, from the Bloomsbury Ballroom in London in September 2006 to Belgrade on 18 June 2011. Arctic Monkeys covered it on their 2007 tour, and the Rolling Stones covered it on their 2026 album Foreign Tongues.
