Summertime Clothes
A simple melody that came suddenly in rehearsal, and the song on which band and producer disagreed about vocal levels.

The second single from Merriweather Post Pavilion came out on 29 June 2009 in the UK and 7 July in the US, with remixes by Dam-Funk, Leon Day and Zomby. Its first name was Bearhug, with different lyrics and higher-pitched vocals. Portner told the French magazine VoxPop the melody came suddenly while they rehearsed at his house, and that he tried to add a darker second melody but nobody liked it, so he kept the song's almost naive simplicity.
The mix was a point of friction. Allen wanted the vocals up, the band wanted them lower and blended in. Weitz told Sound On Sound they would do three mixes, with the vocals where the band wanted them, louder where Allen wanted them, and lower still, and that it was very rare that they chose the loud one. Summertime Clothes was the biggest example, and even after finishing, Weitz said, the band wondered whether the vocals were too loud while Allen felt the opposite. Richardson of Pitchfork heard a surge of distortion and kick drum starting with almost militaristic pomp, then a chorus hook, I want to walk around with you, of pure sweetness.
Video and live
Danny Perez directed the video, released on 12 June 2009, with the Brooklyn dance crew FLEX. The band played the song on the Late Show with David Letterman on 7 May 2009, before its release, with four dancers draped in sheets behind them. It is in the soundtrack of the video game Skate 3. On the 20 January 2009 tape it is fifth in the set.
