Sleeper in Metropolis

The Changing Places track that became her signature club record, here in a live version.
Anne Clark, from Changing Places (1983)

Clark wrote the lyrics and Harrow the music. The studio recording was made at Denmark Street Studios in London in March and April 1983, engineered by Benjamin Allen and produced by Harrow and Clark, with Harrow on keyboards, electronic percussion, saxophone, clarinet and voices; a Martyn Webster and Harrow remix dates from 1984. The single's year is contested: MusicBrainz lists single releases dated 1984 and 1985, Wikipedia says 1985 and one interview summary says 1983. It did not chart. A club hit in Berlin, Chicago and Dallas, it was remixed by the San Francisco DJ service Razormaid, and the 2003 Blank and Jones mix, "Sleeper in Metropolis 3000", reached number 38 in Germany.

The lyrics, which are not quoted here, are about urban life as isolating, the individual insignificant in the city's systems, and love and touch blocked by barriers; the official lyric page offers no commentary from her, and her own account is in Electronic Sound issue 101, which is paywalled. A 2007 blog reads it as about the domination of machines over nature.

Setlist.fm records 64 plays, second to "Our Darkness" with 69. Our upload is titled the live version from Amsterdam in 1988, but we found no source for an Amsterdam concert: the 1988 live album R.S.V.P. was recorded at the Music Centrum in Utrecht, and a YouTube clip is titled Live in Utrecht, 1988. The uploader is her Topic channel. Other live versions include her Rockpalast set at the Biskuithalle in Bonn on April 12, 1998, 8:16, released in 2023, and a 2012 video from the Postbahnhof in Berlin.
