Quincy Jones and Aretha Franklin produced it, the first Atlantic album not produced by Jerry Wexler, who had planned a jazz record. More than 20 songs were recorded, and eight outtakes are on Rare and Unreleased Recordings from the Golden Reign of the Queen of Soul (2007). It reached number 30 on the Billboard 200, her first Atlantic album to miss the top 25, and number 2 on the R&B albums chart; Master of Eyes, which reached 33 on the pop chart, was a single but not on the LP.
Rolling Stone's Russell Gersten was mixed, praising her singing and criticizing the production and her own songs; Jazz Digest said she was cooking her tail off; AllMusic gives three stars and Christgau a B-minus. Ebony said Angel presented Aretha at her best. The catalogue number was not verified.
