Jobim wrote Corcovado in 1960, and its Portuguese title refers to the mountain overlooking Rio de Janeiro. Gene Lees wrote the English lyrics later. After the success of The Girl from Ipanema, Creed Taylor had Astrud sing the English-language passage on this track as well. The uDiscover writer Martin Chilton describes it as having delicate accompaniment from Jobim and a brilliant solo from Getz.
Pitchfork points out how little of the album she appears on: only Ipanema and Corcovado, less than three minutes of it. João Gilberto had already recorded the song on O Amor, o Sorriso e a Flor in 1960, and Miles Davis recorded it for Quiet Nights in 1962.
