Far Away appears on That Girl from Ipanema (1977), an album that also carries a disco version of her best-known song arranged by Vincent Montana Jr. The writer Doug Payne says it was the first time, and as far as is known the only time, that Astrud and the trumpeter Chet Baker worked together. She composed the melody, and he credits the lyrics most likely to a collaboration between her and Hal Shaper. Don Sebesky arranged and conducted it, one of three songs on the album that he handled.
In a 2002 interview on her official site she named Baker and João Gilberto as musical influences. She had earlier sung with him in a San Francisco club, when he invited her up from the audience and they played a bossa nova Fly Me to the Moon. She called the Far Away experience a highlight of her career. The album failed to chart. In the United States it came out on the small Image label, and Far Away was the flip side of the single of the disco Ipanema.
