Written by all three members, Jazz Carnival opens side two of Light as a Feather and runs 9:29 on the original LP. It was cut at Studio Sonoviso in Rio with Toninho Barbosa engineering and Aleuda on percussion. Milestone released it as a UK single in December 1979, with Fly Over the Horizon on the B-side, and it reached No. 19 in 1980. It was featured on Top of the Pops, and in Italy it became the theme of Rai 2's Mixer. Songlines called it the album's disco and fusion smash. Malheiros remembered Bertrami responding to its success by forbidding the band to repeat it.

Azymuth re-recorded it for Carnival in 1996, and Global Communication's Space Jazz mix came out the same year. In 2012 Far Out released the unedited full original mix, about 10:38, for the first time. Ten City replayed its bassline on Devotion, will.i.am sampled it for Big and Chunky, and Jamiroquai, Calibro 35 and the Florian Pellissier Quintet have covered it. Kerri Chandler, Mr Scruff and Four Tet are among the DJs who play it.

Live

It is one of the band's most played songs. The crowd at Ronnie Scott's called for it in March 2015, it was in the 50th-anniversary set at Blue Note Rio in 2025, and it was still in the set in Barcelona in September 2026. The upload in the hypersongs web is Far Out Recordings' official upload of the 2012 remix of the album version, made from the original 16-track tapes.
