Recorded and mixed by Toninho Barbosa at Studio Sonoviso in Rio and mastered by David Turner at Fantasy Studios, it was produced by the band with Joel B. Leibovitz and dedicated to the memory of Silvio Caruso. Far Out says the trio played the studio itself as an instrument and were early users of the Big Muff and the Dolby system. Beside Jazz Carnival and Fly Over the Horizon it holds Stanley Clarke and Flora Purim's title song and Toninho Horta's Dona Olímpia.
AllMusic's Thom Jurek credits it with putting the trio on the charts. In 2012 Far Out reissued it remixed by Daniel Maunick from the original 16-track tapes, with bonus tracks including the full original mix of Jazz Carnival and Theo Parrish's reworking of Avenida das Mangueiras. Reviewing that edition, Songlines called Azymuth a little band with a big sound.
