The band recorded at Clearwell Castle in Gloucestershire three months after the debut came out, again with Ron Nevison, who mixed it at Air Studios in London. Hipgnosis designed the sleeve once more. Good Lovin' Gone Bad was the first single, reaching 36 on the Hot 100, and Feel Like Makin' Love followed in June, reaching 10. Kirke wrote two of the songs, Anna and Weep No More, and Whiskey Bottle was a non-album B-side.
The album reached number three in both the UK and the US, and went gold in the US within a month. Ed Naha, reviewing it in Rolling Stone, called Shooting Star "the piece de resistance of the album (and the highpoint of Paul's writing career)" and ended by calling Bad Company "a winning band in anyone's book".
