Ralphs wrote it while he was in Mott the Hoople, where it went unused, and Bad Company recorded it for their debut album and released it as their first single. It reached number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 1 on Cashbox. Ralphs tuned his guitar to open C: "It never really sounds right in standard tuning. It needs the open C to have that ring." The riff borrows from the one he used for Mott's One of the Boys; Rolling Stone's Bud Scoppa called it the "Zeppelin-like riff Mick played in Mott's stage version".

The song opens with Kirke counting in and hitting two beats. He told Songfacts that the band was spread out across the house at Headley Grange, with him in the basement and Burrell in the boiler room, so he counted to get everyone's attention. The radio single cut the count-in and much of the ending. Matt Wardlaw of Ultimate Classic Rock heard Rodgers "exuding complete confidence in his ability to land the girl that he wants". Queen + Paul Rodgers performed it on the live album Return of the Champions.
