Gough began with the phrase the night Sinatra died and a melody he played to his parents, who were indifferent. After writing the opening line, he sang random words into a Dictaphone, studied the results and arranged the phrases into verses. He then worked it up with the producer Tom Rothrock and the drummer Joey Waronker. It was recorded at Cello Studios in Los Angeles, the Embassy in Basingstoke and Olympic Studios in London. The lyric mentions Madonna, Frank Sinatra, Jeff Buckley, Kurt Cobain, John Lennon and Queen Elizabeth II. Gough said the song was about not wasting the chance with real life because you have the opportunity to be a pop star.
It was released on 14 October 2002, entered and peaked at number nine in the UK, and stayed in the top 100 for only three weeks. It remains his highest-charting single and his only British top ten hit. The video was directed by Simon Henwood, and Gough performed it on Top of the Pops. The CD single included a live version from Glastonbury 2002. AllMusic's Tom Maginnis called it an ambitiously orchestrated bit of pop music, equal parts confessional and affirmation.
