Once Around the Block began as an EP in August 1999, short enough to be thought of as a single. Its modest UK chart success persuaded XL Recordings to sign Gough to make his debut album. It peaked at 46 on release and, when reissued, at 27, and was the first single from The Hour of Bewilderbeast.

Pitchfork singled it out in 2000, saying Gough stomped harder on it and that it reached for the heights of George Harrison's My Sweet Lord. The Guardian's Luke Bainbridge later wrote of the breezy euphoria of the song, and Harriet Gibsone counted it among the album's confident singles.
