The Shining opens The Hour of Bewilderbeast, and the Guardian's Luke Bainbridge singled out its opening bars of cello and French horn. The Guardian's Harriet Gibsone wrote that the album begins soft and sun-dappled, like the start of a summer's morning, with this song. A photograph in the Guardian shows Gough performing it in 2009. When he took the album on tour for its fifteenth anniversary, he played the whole album.
