Dis, quand reviendras-tu ?
Her 1962 song of waiting for a lover to return, with words and music by Barbara, covered by Martha Wainwright, Benjamin Biolay and Nana Mouskouri among many.
Barbara (1962)
Barbara wrote both words and music and released the song in 1962 as an Odeon single, 2:52. French Wikipedia says it was written for her lover Hubert Ballay, a diplomat and songwriter and later an artistic director at Barclay, whom she met in Cote d'Ivoire in 1959, joined for three months in Abidjan in 1961 singing at the cabaret Le Refuge, and then waited for in Paris, reportedly writing about 200 letters. A France Culture broadcast instead puts the writing shortly after her father's death in 1959; the two accounts have not been reconciled. The text is three eight-line stanzas in alexandrines with a six-line refrain in hexasyllables, and does not specify genders until the last lines.
It is on the third volume (1962-1963) of the 1992 Polygram Barbara integrale, and she made a German version, "Sag, wann bist du bei mir ?", adapted by Walter Brandin, for Barbara singt Barbara (1967). Cora Vaucaire (1963), Nicole Croisille (1963), Eva (1965), Mouloudji (1965), Marie-Paule Belle (2001), Benjamin Biolay (2004, on Daphne's Treize chansons de Barbara), Martha Wainwright (2005), Patrick Bruel (2015), Nana Mouskouri (2018) and Julien Clerc (2021) have recorded it, among others, and Camelia Jordana's "Non Non Non (Ecouter Barbara)" (2010) alludes to it. Which version our upload is has not been determined.
