(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party!)

A joke on frat-house party anthems that the audience took at face value and made their only American top ten single.

Released in December 1986 as the album's fourth single, with Paul Revere on the B-side, it was meant as a light parody of party songs such as Smokin' in the Boys Room and I Wanna Rock. Mike D said many fans were oblivious that it was a total goof on them. It reached number 7 on the Hot 100 in the week of 7 March 1987, their only US top ten, and number 11 in Britain. Sources disagree on who wrote it: one account credits Yauch and Tom Cushman of the side project Brooklyn, another Yauch, Ad-Rock and Rubin.

Ric Menello and Adam Dubin directed the video, a party crash that ends in a pie fight, with cameos from Tabitha Soren, Cey Adams, Ricky Powell, Murphy's Law and Rubin. Yauch wrote and directed a sequel, Fight for Your Right Revisited, in 2011 as the video for Make Some Noise. On the first headlining tour a 20-foot inflatable penis was used during the song, according to Songfacts.

Live and covers

Coldplay played a piano version at All Points West on 2 August 2009, and again at the Hollywood Bowl on 4 May 2012, the day Yauch died. N.Y.C.C. took a hip-house version to number 14 in Britain in 1998, and Motley Crue covered it on their 2024 EP Cancelled.
