Beck and Greg Kurstin recorded Colors at Kurstin's Los Angeles studio between 2013 and 2017 and played nearly every instrument themselves. Beck said the first year was trial and error, that he was touring constantly while making it, and that Dreams was an early song that made him think the idea had legs. Dreams came out as the lead single on 15 June 2015, inspired by MGMT and meant to be good to play live, and peaked at number two on Billboard's Alternative Songs chart. Wow followed on 2 June 2016, a track Beck said he freestyled in the studio without meaning to release it. Up All Night, released to radio in September 2017, reached number one on Alternative Songs, his third chart-topper and the first since E-Pro, and a video for the title track was directed by Edgar Wright.

The album debuted at number three on the Billboard 200 with 46,000 units, and holds a Metacritic score of 72 from 34 reviews. It won Best Alternative Music Album and Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical at the 61st Grammys. The Guardian ranked Seventh Heaven 24th and Up All Night 29th among Beck's songs.
