Beck began the sessions after the Colors tour ended in September 2018, having wanted to work with Pharrell Williams since 2012. They expected a single or an EP, and an album grew from it. Williams co-wrote or co-produced seven tracks. Beck filed for divorce from Marissa Ribisi in February 2019, during the recording, but has said he kept his personal experience apart from the music on purpose. He wanted the songs simple and let them breathe, crediting Williams as a master minimalist. Guests include Chris Martin, Sky Ferreira, Terrell Hines and Alex Lilly. Saw Lightning, co-produced with Williams, appeared as a single on 15 April 2019.
In August 2020 Beck released a visual album, Hyperspace: A.I. Exploration, with NASA JPL, using artificial-intelligence generated space imagery and two new songs. The album was nominated for two Grammys in 2021 and won Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical. The Guardian called it a missed opportunity in its 2020 list of Beck's best songs, while ranking See Through 30th.
