Horizontal was the fourth Bee Gees studio album and the second released internationally. The first session was on 17 July 1967 at Central Sound on Denmark Street. The Change Is Made, recorded on 29 November 1967 at IBC Studios, was the last song recorded for the album. The title track was recorded on 7 September and 28 October.
The album includes the hit singles Massachusetts and World, and the release was followed by a Scandinavian tour. It was considered the heaviest album the Bee Gees had recorded, because of the increased influence of Melouney and Petersen. Bill Shepherd arranged the orchestral parts.
