Trafalgar was the ninth Bee Gees album and the seventh released internationally. Recording began on 28 January 1971 with We Lost the Road, When Do I and How Can You Mend a Broken Heart, and continued through April. When Do I came from sessions in December 1970, and Alan Kendall was the new guitarist. Every song chosen for release was a ballad.

It is the only full-length Bee Gees album with Geoff Bridgford as an official member, and the sleeve credited him as Jeoff Bridgford. The cover depicts the battle of Trafalgar. The lead single was the group's first US No. 1, but it failed to chart in Britain, as did the album. The album was a moderate hit in the US and peaked at No. 34. Don't Wanna Live Inside Myself, the second single, reached No. 57 there, and Israel was a single in the Netherlands, where it reached No. 22. The group toured the US in the fall of 1971, including seven shows in New York City. The album is included in 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.
