Main Course was the thirteenth Bee Gees studio album and the eleventh released worldwide. It was the last of their albums that Atlantic released in the US under Robert Stigwood's distribution deal, and the first to include the keyboardist Blue Weaver. Arif Mardin, who had produced the previous album Mr. Natural, produced it with the engineer Karl Richardson at Criteria Studios in Miami.
Barry Gibb quoted Eric Clapton's advice to go to America and "do the same" as 461 Ocean Boulevard. The album has the first prominent use of Barry's falsetto.
The album peaked at No. 14 on the Billboard album chart and stayed on the chart for 74 weeks. Its singles on the US chart were Jive Talkin' at No. 1, Nights on Broadway at No. 7 and Fanny (Be Tender with My Love) at No. 12. It was No. 1 on the Canadian RPM albums chart.
