Sweetest Decline leans toward jazz and strings. Beki Doe and Oliver Kraus arranged the strings, played by a group of violins, violas and cellos, and Dr. John plays piano. Ted Barnes adds bouzouki and Will Blanchard plays drums. Victor Van Vugt produced the track, and John Wood recorded the vocals and strings.
In a 2009 Guardian interview Orton was asked for the high point of her career. She answered with Dr. John playing on Sweetest Decline.
