Anti Love Song
Track three on the debut: Davis's own answer to the radio love song.
Betty Davis, from Betty Davis (1973)
"Anti Love Song" is the third track on Betty Davis (Just Sunshine, 1973), 4:32, written by Davis and recorded in 1972 and 1973 at Wally Heider Studios in San Francisco with Greg Errico producing; the album's credits do not say which of its musicians played on this track. Wikipedia describes her vocal as playful and sensual. Oliver Wang wrote in his 2022 NPR obituary essay that instead of chasing a hit with a conventional love song she wrote an anti-love song, a sign that she rejected the usual R&B formula. No comment from Davis on its meaning was found.
It was never a single. It was collected on Anti Love: The Best of Betty Davis and This Is It! and has been on funk compilations including ?uestlove's Babies Makin Babies 2 and Rare Funk Vol. 10. Mahalia Barnes & The Soul Mates, with Joe Bonamassa, recorded a cover for the tribute Ooh Yea! The Betty Davis Songbook. No video, chart history or sample information was found, and which version our upload is was not established.
