After two lo-fi records made at home, Callahan recorded Julius Caesar in a professional studio, though he kept control of the process, with only Kim Osterwalder helping on cello. Osterwalder plays on Your Wedding, One Less Star and Stick in the Mud. Domino reissued it in Europe in 2001.

Chosen One was covered live by the Flaming Lips in a Minneapolis record store on 12 December 1993, a recording that later appeared on their EP Due to High Expectations. A Peel session version of the song is on the rarities set Accumulation: None. One Less Star was used in Above the Below, a 2003 documentary about a David Blaine stunt, and 37 Push Ups appeared on the Kill Rock Stars compilation Rock Stars Kill. In 2022 Callahan said it was the first record where he thought all the songs were great.
