The album comes from the same 25 June 1961 date as Sunday at the Village Vanguard. LaFaro died on 6 July 1961, and when Evans came back to trios in 1962 it was with Motian and the bassist Chuck Israels. The title piece had started as a short solo on his 1956 debut and is a portrait of his niece. Alongside it are My Foolish Heart, Detour Ahead, My Romance, Leonard Bernstein's Some Other Time and Miles Davis's Milestones.

Thom Jurek wrote that the Vanguard dates and Explorations were the ultimate expressions of the trio. Colin Larkin's All Time Top 1000 Albums placed the record at number 465 in 2000, and the Penguin Guide to Jazz awarded it a crown in all nine editions from 1992. The CD adds alternate takes of three of the six pieces and Porgy, which Keepnews said had been left off the LP for lack of space.
