Evans first recorded the piece as a short solo on New Jazz Conceptions in 1956. The Debby of the title is his niece Debby Evans, then three, whom he often took to the beach. The usual choice for the definitive performance is the trio's live recording at the Village Vanguard on 25 June 1961. A less famous first take from the same day appears as a bonus track on various releases.
Lyrics came later. The Swedish poet Beppe Wolgers wrote Swedish words in 1963 for the singer Monica Zetterlund. Evans heard her record on a Swedish tour, and his trio accompanied her in Stockholm in August 1964. Gene Lees wrote English lyrics that year for Tony Bennett, and Evans accompanied Bennett on them in June 1975, the only time he recorded with those words. His last recording of the waltz was live at the Keystone Korner on 7 September 1980, eight days before he died.
