Explorations

John Carisi's Israel was first recorded in 1949 by Miles Davis for the Birth of the Cool sessions. It is described as a minor blues. The piece has since become most associated with Evans, who opened Explorations with it, recorded at Bell Sound Studios in New York on 2 February 1961.

The trio's version runs 6:12. Gerry Mulligan's Concert Jazz Band also recorded it in 1961, with Carisi rearranging the tune for the date.
