Finneas O'Connell wrote, mixed and produced Ocean Eyes. He first wrote it for his band, the Slightlys, then decided it fitted her voice better. Fred Diaz, her dance teacher at the Revolution Dance Center in Los Angeles, had asked them for a song for choreography, and they uploaded it to SoundCloud on 18 November 2015 so he could download it. The track was made entirely with Logic stock sounds, and the vocal was recorded with an Audio-Technica AT2020 microphone. Eilish has cited Lapsley's Station as a key influence.
Megan Thompson directed a video that appeared on 24 March 2016, and a dance performance video followed on 22 November. Darkroom and Interscope re-released the song on 18 November 2016 as the lead single from Don't Smile at Me, and it also appears on the soundtrack of the film Everything, Everything. The song is in E minor at 145 beats per minute. It reached 84 on the Billboard Hot 100 and 72 on the UK Singles Chart. A remix EP with Astronomyy, Blackbear, Goldhouse and Cautious Clay came out on 14 January 2017.
Eilish has played it on her 2019, 2020, 2022 and 2024 to 2025 tours.
