It was the first song Eilish and Finneas wrote for the album, under the working title Away from Me. In summer 2019, after the American leg of the When We All Fall Asleep Tour, they flew to Middelfart and wrote the melody of the first chorus on a cheap $80 guitar. They returned to it eight months later and finished it in May or June 2020. Finneas added texture to the acoustic intro with plugins, and Eilish edited her own vocal takes.
The song opens with soft vocals over sparse acoustic instrumentation and moves into distorted guitars, crashing snare and multitracked screaming. Alexis Petridis of the Guardian heard it build from a muffled, lo-fi acoustic ballad into an epic finale. Eilish said it was probably the most therapeutic song she had ever recorded, because she screamed her lungs out. It first appeared in the documentary The World's a Little Blurry.
It was released as the album's sixth single on 30 July 2021, with a video the same day. It reached 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 and six on the Global 200, and won Song of the Year at the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards. It was nominated for four Grammys, including Record of the Year and Song of the Year. She played it on The Tonight Show, Jimmy Kimmel Live! and Saturday Night Live in 2021, and at Coachella and Glastonbury in 2022.
