What Was I Made For?

The Barbie song that won an Oscar, a Golden Globe and two Grammys.
Billie Eilish (2023)

Written by
Billie Eilish, Finneas O'Connell
Released
13 July 2023

Atlantic, Darkroom and Interscope released it on 13 July 2023 as the fifth single from Barbie the Album. Eilish and Finneas wrote it after the film's director, Greta Gerwig, showed them a rough cut at Warner Bros. Studios. It was the first song they had written after a long writer's block. Eilish said she did not think about herself once while writing it, only the character and how she would feel. Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt added production and orchestral arrangement, and Kinelski mixed it. In the film it plays when Barbie meets the spirit of her creator, Ruth Handler.

Eilish directed the video, shot in one take. She wears a yellow dress and a blonde wig. The song reached number one in Australia, Ireland, Malaysia, Switzerland and the UK, and 14 on the Billboard Hot 100. NME's Thomas Smith wrote that it was as much about its creator as about Barbie.

It won the Golden Globe for Best Original Song at the 81st ceremony and the Academy Award at the 96th. At the Grammys it won Song of the Year, the first film song to do so since Celine Dion's My Heart Will Go On from Titanic, and Best Song Written for Visual Media. The Oscar made Eilish the youngest person to win two Academy Awards in any category.
