Debut was produced by Nellee Hooper and Björk, with Marius de Vries on the first ten tracks, and Björk produced The Anchor Song alone. She produced about ninety percent of the music, and she said Hooper was too good-taste for her liking. Derek Birkett of One Little Indian funded it and reportedly disliked Violently Happy but let her carry on. There's More to Life Than This was recorded live in the toilets of London's Milk Bar, Big Time Sensuality was written late as a tribute to Hooper, and The Anchor Song is a love song to Iceland. Talvin Singh brought an Indian film studio orchestra to Venus as a Boy. Fluke, Underworld, Sabres of Paradise and The Black Dog remixed tracks from it.

Reception

The label expected about 40,000 sales in the first week and did better. The album reached number three in the UK, where it stayed on the chart for 79 weeks and went double platinum, and number sixty-one in the US, and has sold about 4.7 million copies worldwide. NME gave it nine out of ten and named it its album of 1993, while Rolling Stone gave it two stars. It won two BRITs in 1994.
