Björk first wrote it in 1988 while in the Sugarcubes, and Nellee Hooper produced the finished version. It came out on 7 June 1993 as the first single from Debut, with Atlantic on the B-side. The riff is said to be sampled from Antônio Carlos Jobim, and it is also said to have been inspired by Go Down Dying by the Ray Brown Orchestra. Björk described the song as an animal's view of humans, with the animals supposed to win in the end, and linked it to a childhood in which she felt more at ease alone outdoors.
It reached number one in Iceland, number thirty-six in the UK and number two on the US Dance Club and Alternative Airplay charts. Michel Gondry's video, his first with Björk, loosely follows Goldilocks and the Three Bears and drew on Norstein's Hedgehog in the Fog. It received six MTV Video Music Award nominations in 1994 and a Grammy nomination.
Live
She played it on harpsichord for MTV Unplugged and with Underworld at Roskilde in 1994, and later in versions for the Vespertine tour's electronics and orchestra, brass on the Volta tour and flute on the Utopia tour. Setlist.fm logs it in 195 of her sets.
