Recorded in Nassau and then London, Post was made with a wider group of producers than Debut. Björk began in late 1994 at Compass Point Studios, where she waded into the sea to sing at sunset and recorded the first version of Cover Me from a cave. Hooper had urged her to produce the album herself, and she insisted that he co-produce it. Army of Me and The Modern Things dated from sessions with Graham Massey of 808 State in Manchester before Debut, and Massey said Army of Me took about a day. Isobel took shape during a Christmas visit to Reykjavík, with lyrics written with the poet Sjón, his first songwriting job. Tricky co-produced Enjoy and Headphones on condition that she sing on two tracks of his. I Miss You changed most, after Howie Bernstein gave it a Latin rhythm and Talvin Singh added percussion. Eumir Deodato's strings lifted Hyperballad, You've Been Flirting Again and Isobel. It's Oh So Quiet was the last track recorded, and the album was finished in April 1995.

She said the title meant that every song was written after her move to England, in contrast to Debut, written while she lived in Iceland. Stéphane Sednaoui photographed the cover in Piccadilly Circus on 1 April 1995, and the airmail jacket she wears was made by Hussein Chalayan from Tyvek.

Singles and reception

Six singles followed: Army of Me on 24 April 1995, Isobel in August, It's Oh So Quiet in November, Hyperballad in February 1996, Possibly Maybe and I Miss You, which came out on 17 February 1997. Army of Me reached number ten in the UK, Hyperballad number eight and It's Oh So Quiet number four, and the last of these became her biggest hit. Telegram, a remix album, came out in November 1996. The Post tour was her first proper North American tour as a solo artist, with Aphex Twin as the opener.

The album reached number one in Iceland, number two in the UK and number thirty-two in the US. It was certified platinum in the UK, the US, Canada, Australia and Europe, and had sold 810,000 copies in the US by 2007. Rolling Stone's Lorraine Ali praised it, while Robert Christgau was more critical, and it placed seventh in the Village Voice's Pazz & Jop poll for 1995. Pitchfork later gave it a ten. In a 2020 Sunday Review Jenn Pelly wrote that back in London Björk added bagpipes, trumpet, saxophones, dulcimers, harp, an orchestra and a brass band, and that she wrote Headphones about falling asleep to mixtapes made by Massey.
