Fab 5 Freddy took Harry and Stein to a rap event in the Bronx in 1978, and they decided to write their own rap in late 1979, combining what they heard with Chic-inspired disco. Destri found tubular bells in the studio. Stein said the title punned on rap. The coda mentions Fab 5 Freddy and Grandmaster Flash.
Released on 12 January 1981, it spent two weeks at number one on the Hot 100 and was the first number-one single in the US to feature rap vocals. The video, shot in the East Village, was the first rap video shown on MTV and has cameos from Fab 5 Freddy, Lee Quinones and Jean-Michel Basquiat. The Guardian ranked it seventh among their best, and Erasure covered it in 1997.
