God Bless the Child

A Billie Holiday song of 1939, given a horn chart and a Latin solo.
Blood, Sweat & Tears, from Blood, Sweat & Tears (1968)

Written by
Billie Holiday, Arthur Herzog Jr.
Released
1968
Album
Blood, Sweat & Tears

Billie Holiday and Arthur Herzog Jr. wrote it in 1939, and Holiday first recorded it on 9 May 1941. In her autobiography Lady Sings the Blues she said an argument with her mother over money led to it. The band recorded it for the 1968 album, with Clayton-Thomas singing. It runs 5:55 and was the last track on side one.

Jon Landau complained in Rolling Stone that a Latin-style horn solo broke into an otherwise fine reading. On 15 October 2009 Lipsius sat in with the band on the song at the Berklee Performance Center, with Darcel Wilson as the singer.
