Brenda Holloway, her sister Patrice, Frank Wilson and Berry Gordy wrote it, and Holloway released it in 1967 on Tamla as her final single on Tamla. It reached 39 on the Hot 100. The impetus was a breakup Holloway was going through, and she and Gordy argued over the arrangement.
Al Kooper had arranged the song for Blood, Sweat & Tears before he left, and Fred Lipsius co-arranged it. The band's version was produced by James William Guercio with Clayton-Thomas singing. It reached number 2 in the US in April 1969, behind the 5th Dimension's Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In, and 35 in Britain in May. In Canada it was number 1 for two weeks. It became a Gold record.
