Albarn wrote the lyrics, and all four members share the music credit. He had a slower acoustic demo, and Coxon proposed a faster, louder arrangement with a deliberately amateurish guitar sound. Coxon said they wanted to blow the record labels' heads off. The title began as its place on the tracklist. Coxon called it a joke on the record company, and some listeners heard a parody of grunge. It was recorded at Mayfair Studios in London with Stephen Street producing.
The single reached number two in the UK, four in Australia and six on the US Modern Rock chart, where it stayed for 26 weeks. It went 3x Platinum in the UK. Sophie Muller directed the video, in which the band are thrown about by loud amplifiers. It was the intro theme of FIFA: Road to World Cup 98 and was used in adverts for Starship Troopers. BBC Radio 1 listeners ranked it the 15th best track ever in 1998.

Gorillaz played it with Coxon at Demon Dayz Fest in Los Angeles in 2018, and Blur played it at Wembley Stadium on 8 July 2023 after a false start.
