The song first came out as the B-side of "Secrets" but proved the more popular side, holding number 3 on the Hot Soul Singles chart for four weeks. That mattered because R&B charts were then dominated by dance music. Record Collector's Tim Brown called it a rambling ballad and a true return to form.
K-Ci Hailey revised it in 1994 for the soundtrack of Jason's Lyric, and his version reached number 17 on the Hot 100 and number 11 on the Hot R&B Singles chart. Mariah Carey invokes its main hook in her 2005 song "We Belong Together". Paul Simon, writing in the Guardian, called it an eloquent song with lovely guitar work.
