The Valentinos recorded the song at United Recording in Hollywood on 24 March 1964 and released it two months later, with Sam Cooke producing. It entered the Hot 100 on 27 June 1964 and peaked at number 94. The Rolling Stones reached New York on 1 June 1964, heard the record when the DJ Murray the K played it, and recorded their version nine days later at Chess Studios in Chicago.
The Stones' record was their first UK number one, in July 1964, and reached number 26 in the US. Womack said he had told Cooke he did not want the Stones to record it, and that after the royalty cheque arrived he told Cooke Mick Jagger could have any song he wanted. John Anderson took it to number 15 on the country chart in 1985, and the Grateful Dead played it 160 times in concert.
