Womack co-wrote the song with John Grisby and Joe Hicks and produced it himself. It was the second single from Communication and his first crossover Top 40 entry, reaching number 27 on the Hot 100 and number 2 on the R&B chart. It began a four-year run of R&B hits for him.
His brothers sang backing vocals, the Muscle Shoals band played the track, Womack played rhythm guitar and Jimmy Johnson supplied the guitar riff. Aretha Franklin covered it on Hey Now Hey (The Other Side of the Sky) in 1973, and O.V. Wright also recorded it. Barney Hoskyns closed his 2014 Guardian tribute with the line "That's the way we feel about cha, Bobby Womack".
