David Wrench produced, programmed and mixed Sahel. He recorded it with Nadir Khairi at Studio HIBA in Casablanca over ten days. The keyboards were recorded in Boston by Mohamed Araki, and Youba Dia recorded extra vocals at Studio Youba in Brussels. Bombino spent the pandemic lockdown at home in Niamey.
Si Chilan is credited to Ibrahim Ag Alhabib and adapted by Bombino, and the other songs are credited to Bombino as adaptations from the traditional Tuareg repertoire. The CD runs in a different order from the vinyl and carries Si Chilan as an extra track. Speaking to NPR through an interpreter in 2023, Bombino said of his homeland: "What really disturbs me, it looks like where we live is abandoned on purpose."
