The title refers to the supposed melting point of rock. The album was recorded in six weeks at the Warehouse Studios in Philadelphia with Lance Quinn producing, the last of their records he made. It spent 104 weeks on the Billboard 200, peaked at number 37 and went platinum on 19 February 1987. The singles Only Lonely and In and Out of Love both charted on the Hot 100. It is the only Bon Jovi album with songwriting from four members, and Secret Dreams is the one song on which Tico Torres has a writing credit.
The band were unhappy with its sound. Jon said in 2007 that he always overlooked the second album, because they had no time to make it and did not know who they were. Nothing from it was played after the New Jersey tour, apart from a few performances of Tokyo Road in the 1990s and of Only Lonely and Tokyo Road on the 2010 Circle Tour.
