The band went to Vancouver in January 1992 and spent seven months on the album with Bob Rock. They had asked Bruce Fairbairn first, but he was working on Aerosmith's Get a Grip. Of 30 songs written, 14 made the final album, and Jon wrote half of them alone. Jon said in 2007 that the band had been kicked in the teeth by Nirvana but did not pay attention to that, and that he knew he could not rewrite Livin' on a Prayer, so he did not try. He said they wrote some socially conscious lyrics and got a haircut.
The album reached number five on the Billboard 200 and number one in the UK and Australia, and went double platinum. The title track topped the Mainstream Rock chart, and Bed of Roses reached number 10 on the Hot 100. Alec John Such's time in the band ended in 1994.
