After a stretch of commercial decline, Booker T. & the M.G.'s returned to the Top 40 with Hip Hug-Her in 1967. It reached number 37 on the Hot 100 and number 6 on the R&B chart, their best showing since Green Onions. It was the first single on which Jones played a Hammond B-3 organ, the instrument most associated with him. His earlier recordings, including Green Onions, used a Hammond M-3.
The track opens the album of the same name. It was also used under the opening credits of the 1987 film Barfly, starring Mickey Rourke and Faye Dunaway.
