Scholz wrote it about the people he worked with at Polaroid, and about his lack of interest in climbing into management. The demo was finished in 1974, with drum parts developed by Masdea and played on the album by Hashian. Scholz plays acoustic and electric rhythm guitar, lead guitar and bass, and Delp sings. The third and last single from the album, it came out in 1977 and reached number 38 on the Hot 100.

Paul Elliott of Classic Rock ranked it the second best Boston song and quoted Scholz as saying that his music is about escape. Stryper recorded it on their 2009 album Murder by Pride, with Scholz playing guitar. The B-side of the single was Foreplay.
